Back to Basics

Many Belles Down, one of my favorite lines that we carry at Queen of Hearts, has been knocking me dead with the heartbreaking gorgeousness of their spring line.  For the past few weeks we’ve been receiving a steady trickle of softly fluttering, beautifully draping rayon dresses covered in vintage-inspired prints that call to mind the dress that Gloria Grahame wears in It’s a Wonderful Life when, as Violet Bick, she says, “What, this old thing?  Why, I only wear it when I don’t care how I look!” and with a toss of her hair she flounces down the sidewalk, leaving drop-jawed stares and near traffic accidents in her wake.

Our Many Belles Down dresses are admittedly shorter than Violet’s, but the effect is the same.

Then, abruptly, they sent us something different.  It’s not rayon.  It’s not printed.  It’s cotton, it’s solid, it’s simple, it’s comfortable, it’s practical, it has pockets, and it’s $35.  It’s a t-shirt dress!

I love me a t-shirt dress.  They are comfortable, go with anything, and absorb sweat.  You can wear one to work, wear it for after-work drinks, wear it while you dance like a freak with a handsome young man, wear it home with that handsome young man, pass out with it hiked up around your waist, wake up in it the next day feeling reasonably human, and then wear it to work again.  It’s tailored very well, with little pintucks and flattering seams, so you can wear it a few consecutive times without washing it in between.  You can eat big sandwiches in it and the elasticized waistband will grow with you.  We have it in this fabulous bright blue that looks like the pool.  People are going to want to jump into you.  That said, cotton is very receptive to dye, so when you get a big grease stain on the front you can just dye it a darker color (this is the reason so much of my wardrobe is black.  People assume it’s because I’m a career waitress.  I let them keep believing that).  If you don’t trust yourself to keep it clean for more than a day, or if you’re one of those wierdos who really just enjoys wearing black, you can get it in black right off the bat.

You can wear it with long, draping chains or no jewelry at all.  You can wear it with sneakers and take your dog for a walk.

Poetic License Lemon Cupcake, $52

You can also use its simplicity to highlight a pair of killer shoes.  Like, oh, these:
